So I did a little more yarn furring. It’s time consuming, but not hard and feels so friggin SOFT when it’s done.

Left side is heat-treated, right side is just brushed out.

Played with a little ‘striping’ at the bottom. I’m looking for a feathery sort of feel to this.

Craft Time!!

So I saw a tutorial online about how to make yarn tails and I thought… why not use that to make ‘Fur’ ?

I’d had the idea ages ago for a faun costume I was planning to make for our renaissance faire out here, but never got around to it. Now, I have the potential to go to a convention and I am working on a gryphon costume! The trouble with that? I need super long fur for the ‘mane’ and they just don’t make it long enough. Kanekelon looks kind of ‘meh’ unless you’re going for that full Lion effect … SO.

Here it is. Yarn-fur.

I have used “Simply Soft” Cameron (?) brand yarn my mom had laying around and some Red Heart crap we also had laying around. I gave up on the red heart right away (it’s that weird floofy patch on the right) but the Simply Soft is working like a charm.

Supplies:

An embroidery hoop (I don’t like this plastic one, I might change over to wood - they’re cheaper and don’t slip as much)
Yarn - not the ugly cheapy stuff. Don’t use RedHeart. It’s gross. I have, here, “Simply Soft” in Ivory
a rug-hook or crochet hook
‘Jersey’ material or ‘laundry bag’ material. I found this at a fabric store in the utility fabrics section. It just needs to have these holes in it, so you can knot the yarn.
Slicker brush (Dog or cat brush )
Comb
Hair Straightening Iron
Patience
a big trash bag, or a duct tape dummy to shove all the cast off floofs.

Steps:

stretch the material in your hoop and secure. This just makes it easier to knot.
Cut yarn into approximately 6” lengths - You need a bajillion of these. I wrapped the yarn from my hand around my elbow a ton of times, then cut that into 4 chunks that were even lengths.
Using your rug hook or crochet hook, knot the yarn onto the material. I tried lumping 3 pieces together, 2 and also single pieces. The single pieces spread further and lay flatter, so that’s what I went with on the bigger piece in the middle.
Brush that shit out. Brush it. Brush it til your hands fall off. (or it is unwound and pretty fluffy) .. your hand will probably fall off first.
Heat your straightening iron up on the lowest setting.
take the straightening iron to your floofball. You will want to do this in sections to straighten it out and flatten it. The heat also seperates the fibers.
Brush.
heat.
Brush
repeat - until you have a super soft pettable section of fur.

tadah! Now you can take your hand-wefted fur and sew it onto whatever you want!
